Fact Fib or Future For Creatives.


A few ways to play.


A) Play with large group and include physical movement:

  • Have a moderator set up the space and lead the activity by reading each prompt and allowing time for people to respond.

  • Tape four large chart papers on the wall. Label each. 1. Fact 2. Fib 3. Debunk 4.Future. Players respond to each prompt by either writing your response directly on the appropriate chart paper or by writing your response on a post it note and then posting the note on the corresponding chart paper. Physically moving through each prompt adds a valuable layer to the exercise.


B) Play with small group and keep it conversational: Have a moderator facilitate by reading each prompt. People can share their response out loud or take a few minutes to write it down and then read it out loud.


C) Play alone. Read each prompt. Reflect. Write your response and review what emerges.

What is true about creativity?

Examples:

Creativity is something I can develop, improve, exercise

Creativity is productive and pleasurable

Unhealthy comparison kills creativity


FIB

What is untrue about creativity?

Examples:

Creativity /art is not a reasonable, respectable or viable career choice

Everything has already been done or said - it's not worth it to create

Financial compensation determines the value of my creativity


DEBUNK

What evidence debunks the fibs you sometimes believe about creativity?

Examples:

Every remarkable invention, advancement, creation in the world emerged from the mind of creatives

Generation after generation from the beginning of time creatives have found fresh and innovative ways to uniquely share the same ideas and themes common to all humanity

Some of the most creative people in the world do not get paid to create. Some of the highest paid creatives in the world are not very creative at all.


FUTURE

What future is possible for you as a creative?

Examples:

Incorporate a new artistic discipline into my practice

Start or grow a flourishing business

Greatly impact someones life through a work of art

Experience satisfaction and gratification though personal growth in my craft

FIB

What is untrue about you as a creative?

Examples:

I'm the best

I'm the worst

I'm not good enough


DEBUNK

What evidence debunks the fibs you sometimes believe about yourself as a creative?

There's always someone I can learn from

There's always someone I can help or teach

I am not my art. What I create does not define me or determine my value

What I create is good enough to bring me joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment.

What I create has brought joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment to others.

How can I reframe creativity and art to see and approach it from a healthy perspective.
